This month’s ‘Full Pickle’ Wine Case:
RED WINES
Domaine Boutinot ‘Les Coteaux Schisteaux’ Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret 2022 – £19.25
This is a fantastic example of a Southern Rhone wine – the Grenache and Syrah grapes are fermented low and slow to pull out as much flavour as possible from the grapes. They are then aged in a mixture of large & small old oak barrels to add tertiary aromas of exotic spice, cigar box, cracked black pepper and a dash of vanilla. It’s all beautifully blended to give a deliciously full bodied experience. Simply add a roast dinner for sheer perfection.
Montresor Capitel della Crosara, Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore 2023 – £20.50
This really is an amazing wine. A light and fruity Valpolicella wine (hailing from the northern Italian region of Veneto), has Amarone grape skins passed through it to begin a second fermentation and to add those classic Amarone flavours to the wine. You’ll find a warm, inviting, richly fruity nose, with aromas of fresh morello cherry, ripe plum and hints of dried fruits. The palate is similarly full-flavoured with concentrated, crunchy black cherry, brown spice and vanilla notes and a hint of liquorice. The long finish has the classic bitter cherry fruit finish typical of ripasso.
Peter Lehmann Hill & Valley Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2023 – £16.50
Peter Lehmann’s legacy continues long after his death, and ‘The Barossan’ certainly knew how to handle his Shiraz. This example has been aged in old and new French oak to give robust but integrated tannins to drink now or age for over 10 years in the bottle. There’s a nose of plum, raspberry, violet flower, blueberry, mocha and a hint of spice. On the palate its fresh blueberry fruit with lots of plum, dark cherries and young blackcurrant fruits. A long fine tannin structure throughout gives an excellent backbone to this food friendly style of Barossa Shiraz.
White/Rose Wines
Granbazán Etiqueta Ambar Albariño, Rías Baixas 2024 – £25.50
The grapes for this wine are grown in the Rias Baixas region of North East Spain, just one kilometre from the ocean, and you can taste the sea influence in this wine. Fresh almost tropical aromas then stone fruit and citrus on the palate with a creamy texture, mineral notes, vibrant acidity and classic saline characters. Quite ripe and complex in style but with fresh balancing acidity and a classic saline character. This is an absolute benchmark Albariño from one of the top producers.
Tenuta Aquilaia Vermentino, Toscana 2025 – £16.75
Vermentino is grown in various parts of the Mediterranean, but it feels most at home in Italy. This Tuscan offering has a zesty aromatic nose with notes of preserved lemon, wild herbs and white flower. The palate is taut and fresh with bright citrus fruit and a lightly mineral, saline character. All balanced by crisp acidity, and with a touch of white pepper on the finish.
Tentua Santa Seraffa Gavi del Comune di Gavi, Gavi DOCG 2025 – £16.50
Gavi is one of those wines that you don’t know you love, but you do… The name comes from the town of Gavi in the Northern Italian region of Piemonte, and is made from the Cortese grape. This wine is a fine and pure expression of Gavi with pretty aromas of flora, citrus and green apple combined with more complex hints of frangipane. The palate has apple and lemon characters, and an appealing weight and minerality. The finish is textural, long and defined. Awesome!!
